When redundancy strikes, it is natural to view everything through the lens of loss. You've lost a job, a structure, a community, and possibly even some of your confidence. The glass now appears half empty, stripped of the stability and confidence that once defined your life. However, with time and perspective, you'll understand that how you choose to view that glass dictates how fast and completely you repair.
It is not about spreading toxic positivism or pretending everything is alright when it isn't. It is about shifting the attention from what is missing to what is still present and possible. Seeing the glass half full does not remove the suffering; rather, it alters how you deal with it.
The “half empty” mindset says, I’ve lost everything. The “half full” mindset says, I still have my skills, experience, relationships, and potential. Both are true, but only one moves you forward.
Think of redundancy like a storm that clears away the clutter. It’s uncomfortable, it shakes things up, but when it passes, you’re left with fresh space to rebuild. That empty space isn’t failure; it’s possibility. You now have the rare chance to re-evaluate your direction without the pressure of routine.
In the UK, redundancy often comes with practical supports — notice pay, consultation periods, and sometimes career transition help. These aren’t just safety nets; they’re tools that buy you time to reorient. Many people use this window to learn something new, start small side projects, or simply breathe for the first time in years.
It's acceptable to grieve. In reality, it's necessary. However, when you're ready, begin identifying what's still under your control. Your ability to learn. Your network. You are adaptable. Your creativity. These are your half-full elements—the resources that will fill the rest of the glass.
Shifting your thinking also entails changing your self-talk. Rather than replying, "I'll never find another job," consider adding, "I'm in a transition phase, and I'm preparing for my next opportunity." The words we say influence our emotional resiliency. You may not realise it yet, but this experience has the potential to be one of the most defining seasons of your life—not because of what was lost, but because of how you chose to respond. Many who once saw their redundancy as an ending later describe it as the beginning of their best chapter.
When you train your eyes to see the glass half full, you stop waiting for rescue and start creating your comeback. You stop focusing on the leak and start building the refill. And gradually, the glass doesn’t just look half full — it becomes overflowing again.
