13. MANAGING YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY - Becoming Organised - Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration - Empowering And Inspiring Generations

 13. MANAGING YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY

Although time is one of our most precious resources, many people find it difficult to effectively manage it.  It is easy to feel like there is never enough time in the day because there are so many tasks and diversions.  The key to efficient time management is to work smarter, not harder.  You can feel more in control of your schedule and increase your productivity by making minor adjustments to the way you organise and spend your time.

Time monitoring is an excellent place to start.  Many people underestimate the amount of time required for jobs, or spend more time on trivial activities than they realise.  For a few days, keep a journal of your daily activities to pinpoint time-wasting behaviours.  You can make wiser choices once you know where your time is going and how to spend it more effectively.

Setting priorities is also essential.  Focus on the 20% of tasks that yield 80% of the results by applying the 80/20 rule.  Don’t waste too much time on unimportant things.  Another way to maintain focus is to schedule your chores in time blocks.  To avoid distractions and procrastination, set out specified times for meetings, crucial work, and even breaks.  You teach your mind to be completely present and engaged when you set aside time for particular activities, which improves the calibre and productivity of your job.

Learning to say no is one of the most crucial time management skills.  You may become exhausted and unable to concentrate on your priorities if you take on more work than you can handle, such as meetings, tasks, or favours.  By establishing boundaries and concentrating on what is really important, you can safeguard your time.
