16. ARE YOU AN ASSET OR A LIABILITY? Nobody in the UK owes you anything. Not your employer, not your landlord, not even your friend who has ‘been here longer.’ That is why every immigrant must ask themselves on a frequent basis, “Am I an asset or a liability?” Are you providing or detracting value in whatever location you occupy—work, Mosque, ?Church, community, or home? Are you recognised for problem-solving or for constantly complaining?
Being an asset includes arriving prepared, remaining trustworthy, and planning ahead. At work, it is you doing your job well. It involves taking the initiative rather than waiting to be chased. In your personal life, it means being emotionally secure, doing your part in relationships, and not relying on others for everything. A liability, on the other hand, is someone people feel obligated to help but secretly want to avoid.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Nobody thrives in isolation, and nobody wants dead weight. If you’re continuously in crisis mode, borrowing, moaning, and wanting to be rescued, something has to change. Of course, everyone passes through difficult times. However, the idea is to progress beyond “I need help” to “I can help others too.” That transformation affects how people treat you and the possibilities that come your way.
Jack Lookman’s Empowerment and Inspiration
In the United Kingdom, people do not often express things directly, but rather observe. They keep track of if you are consistently late, never follow through, or always wait to be told what to do. When actual opportunities occur, your name silently moves down the list, even if they grin. In contrast, if you’re dependable, solutions-oriented, and consistent, people will speak your name even in rooms you’ve never entered.
So, take stock today. Are you the person others rely on, or the one they have to carry? Are you making an impact on your surroundings, or are you simply taking up space? You do not need to be flawless, but you should always strive to be useful. The more valuable you are, the less easily replaced you become. In a country like this, value is what keeps you going.
