Bereavement is one of the most terrible experiences, particularly overseas. When you lose someone in the UK, or even back home in Nigeria, the sadness seems to multiply. You’re separated from your family, unable to go promptly, and frequently forced to deal with it silently while life goes on. In the UK, there is less communal involvement in death. People will offer condolences, but Nigerians may not receive the real support they expect unless they ask for it.
Submission, Gratitude, Faith and Hope
That is why you must learn what the UK system provides in times of loss. Most firms grant bereavement leave, even if it is for a few days. Some employers provide compassionate leave, particularly for close family. Do not be afraid to request it. Take some time to grieve. If you require additional time, use your yearly leave. Mental wellness is important. If you are self-employed, you may need to rely on your savings or curtail your workload temporarily.
Submission, Gratitude, Faith and Hope
There are also bereavement benefits available to those who have lost a spouse or partner. If the deceased paid National Insurance, you might be eligible for financial assistance. Funeral payments are also available if you have a modest income. It will not take away the pain, but it will help to alleviate it.
Culturally, it can be difficult. You may choose to ship the body back home, arrange a funeral in Nigeria, or coordinate with extended family. This incurs fees, paperwork, and emotional stress. That is why it is important to put basic preparations in place, even when everyone is alive. When the unexpected happens, having life insurance, knowing who your next of kin is, and saving for funerals can help.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Death is painful, but in our country, it does not have to shatter you. Know your rights, seek available help, and don’t go it alone. Even in times of distress, the system makes preparations. Lean on them.
