Losing a job can slowly erode your confidence, leaving you feeling smaller than before. However, confidence is not something that can be lost forever; it can be regained with time, intention, and self-kindness.

Confidence after redundancy begins with how you see what occurred. It was not about your failure or incompetence. It was about circumstances—economic transformations, reorganisations, automation, or company strategy. The hardest thing is convincing oneself of the truth while your emotions are still raw. But here's where you start: by detaching yourself from the event. You are not your job title, and leaving it does not diminish your abilities, experience, or worth.

Begin small. Do things that remind you of your capabilities. It could be as basic as organising your home, repairing something, volunteering, or assisting others. These tiny efforts help you regain a sense of involvement and control. Confidence is based on evidence—proof that you can do, create, or influence anything again.

Surround yourself with individuals that inspire you. Talk to people who have experienced redundancy and recovered. Their stories will remind you that this chapter has the potential to be a comeback story. Avoid seclusion, even if your instincts advise you to do so. When there is no one else around to balance the narrative, it is easy to become lost in quiet and self-criticism.

Reflection is another effective way to boost confidence. Write down everything you accomplished in your past employment, including projects finished, problems overcome, and moments when you adapted fast. You'll begin to recognise patterns of resilience and capability that you've probably forgotten. That list serves as confirmation that you are not starting from scratch, but rather from a fresh perspective.

As you start looking forward again, modest victories will boost your confidence. Updating your CV, applying for jobs, and attending interviews are all opportunities to test and develop your skills. Even rejection can become part of your rebuilding process if you see it as feedback rather than failure.
