After redundancy, one of the most important lessons many people learn is the value of structure—how personal and organisational procedures may protect or expose you during times of upheaval. This is where the concept of governance becomes important. While governance may seem like a term reserved for governments or large organisations, its principles apply to everyone, particularly individuals rebuilding, after job loss.

When you've gone through redundancy, you know how uncertain work life can be. However, governance teaches people how to be in control in the face of uncertainty. It entails establishing clear guidelines for how you handle your work, finances, and even your interactions with opportunities. Just as a company has policies in place to keep employees accountable, you can create your own version of personal governance; a simple but firm framework that keeps you on track.

At its core, governance is about alignment and accountability. It assists you in determining what is most important to you and ensures that your actions are consistent with those values. For example, if your goal after redundancy is financial recovery, good governance may include developing a rigorous budget, tracking your spending, and planning for income diversification. If your goal is to further your career, governance may entail establishing retraining deadlines, updating your professional profile, and committing to ongoing learning.

On a broader scale, governance also reminds us of fairness and transparency in the workplace. Many redundancies happen within systems that aren’t always perfectly managed. Understanding governance helps you see how decisions are made, and it empowers you to ask better questions and make better career choices. When you know what healthy structures look like, you can recognise unhealthy ones quickly—and that can save you from future instability.

There’s also an emotional side to this. When life feels chaotic, governance brings back a sense of order. It helps you take charge of your situation, one step at a time. Instead of reacting to what happens, you begin to plan and respond with intention. That shift alone can restore confidence and calm, especially after something as destabilising as redundancy.
