Many UK-based organisations specialise in helping people who have lost their jobs. Job centres, employment charities, training hubs, career advisers, debt support organisations, mental health services and community groups all offer structured help. But most workers only discover these resources through signposting. A friend, a former colleague, a mentor or an adviser may simply say, “Try this place. They can help you.” That one direction can save days of stress and open new doors.

Signposting also protects your mental health. Redundancy can make you feel overwhelmed because everything hits at once. Finances, confidence, job applications, family responsibilities and uncertainty build pressure quickly. When someone points you toward the right service, it reduces your burden. Maybe they direct you to free CV support, online courses, budgeting tools, legal advice, emotional counselling, local food banks or welfare guidance. Each signpost removes a piece of the weight you are carrying.

Signposting becomes even more valuable when you start job hunting. Colleagues may point you to openings you wouldn’t have seen. Recruiters might direct you to specialist agencies in your field. Friends might share opportunities circulating within their networks. Even LinkedIn algorithms, in their own way, signpost opportunities based on your profile. The right signpost at the right moment can shorten your job search significantly.

For many redundant workers, pride becomes a barrier to receiving help. You may hesitate to ask questions or feel embarrassed about requesting direction. But signposting is not charity. It is guidance. It is a normal, healthy part of navigating a complex system. Even career professionals seek signposting when entering new environments because it saves time and focuses effort. Asking for direction is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Signposting can also help you understand benefits and entitlements. Many workers miss out on support simply because they don’t know what they qualify for. A simple referral to Citizens Advice, GOV.UK resources or financial support services can help you access assistance that eases your transition.

One of the most overlooked forms of signposting happens within community circles. Someone might say, “There’s a training event next week,” or “This organisation helps with interview coaching,” or “Try contacting this person, they specialise in your field.” These small signposts often lead to major breakthroughs.

Signposting also gives you momentum. When you know where to go, you take action faster. You submit stronger applications. You attend relevant workshops. You join supportive spaces. You meet people who understand your journey. You begin to feel less stuck. You begin to feel guided rather than stranded. That shift alone can accelerate your recovery.
