Following redundancy, life becomes a balancing act of survival and rebuilding.  It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when your regular income stops but your bills continue to arrive.  Prioritising your expenses becomes more than just a financial decision; it is also an act of self-care and discipline.

The first rule is straightforward: clarity precedes action.  List all of your recurring expenses.  Don’t make estimates; instead, obtain exact figures.  This includes rent or mortgage, electricity, gas, water, council tax, insurance, mobile, groceries and subscriptions.  Once you’ve seen everything clearly, divide it into two categories: essential and non-essential.  Essentials include items that keep you safe, fed, and housed.  Non-essentials are activities that you enjoy but can do without affecting your well-being.

This doesn’t mean you have to give up all joy.  What you are really doing is regaining control.  When money is tight, clarity provides peace.  It tells your mind that you are steering the ship rather than drifting with the tide.  You can even plan small rewards—budget-friendly treats that remind you that life is about more than just survival; it is about living wisely.

You may also need to speak with utility companies, banks, or service providers to discuss flexible payment options.  Many UK providers provide assistance to people who have recently been made redundant.  Asking is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a strategy.  Communicating early helps to avoid debt and stress later.

Another helpful step is tracking every expense for one full month. You’ll be surprised by how much goes to things that aren’t truly adding value. Once you see where the leaks are, you can seal them. Redirect that money into a “recovery fund”—a small pot for upskilling, networking, or even starting a side project.

Redundancy often feels like everything’s been taken from you, but when you manage your expenditure intentionally, you start to regain power. You realise that you are not helpless—you are in a transition, and every pound you spend with purpose becomes a brick in your comeback story.

Thank you very much to all our readers. You are much appreciated.
