Many people, understandably desire to start their own businesses after being laid off.  It’s one of the most effective ways to reclaim control and make something meaningful out of a difficult situation.  One of the most common mistakes people make is jumping into a promising business without first determining whether it is a good fit for their skills, personality, and financial situation.

Choosing the right business starts with self-awareness, not opportunity.  Consider what you enjoy doing, what problems you can solve, and what skills people have consistently compensated you for in the past.  The most successful post-redundancy businesses frequently stem from personal expertise—freelancing, consulting, or turning a professional skill into a service. If you were in HR, you could help small businesses with recruitment. If you were in finance, you might help others budget or plan their taxes. The key is to start where you are and grow from there.

Next, consider your financial readiness. A good business idea can still fail if you don’t give it the right structure and support. Before investing your redundancy package into a business, create a small budget plan. How much will you need to start? What are the unavoidable expenses (website, registration, basic tools)? How long before you might see income? Answering these questions prevents emotional decisions that lead to burnout.

Then, test the waters before diving in. Start small. Offer your service to a few clients, test your product in your local market, or use online platforms to gauge interest. The UK has many support programs for start-ups and small business grants—you don’t have to go it alone. Organisations like GOV.UK’s Business Support Helpline and local enterprise hubs can provide free guidance.

Choosing the right business is really about choosing the right rhythm. It’s about patience, purpose, and planning. The right business won’t just replace your old income—it will align with who you’re becoming after redundancy.
