Using your skills to create tangible goods or services that address actual needs is one of the most powerful ways to recover from redundancy. In the UK, a lot of people have found that losing their work might actually lead to more opportunities for entrepreneurship. You can think more creatively about what you can contribute to the world when you are not bound by a nine-to-five schedule. Frequently, the solution can be found in your existing knowledge.
Anything you produce that consumers are eager to purchase, such as digital tools, handcrafted goods, e-books, or online courses, can be considered a product. In contrast, a service involves directly giving your abilities, such as writing, designing, consulting, tutoring, cleaning, or virtual help. The key is understanding that the experience you’ve gathered over the years still holds value.
After redundancy, starting a small business centred on a product or service doesn't have to be difficult. It might begin as a modest, home-based business with just one employee. This is now easier than ever, thanks to the internet. You can use freelance platforms to provide your talents, sell goods on Etsy, or use social media to generate digital bundles. The goal is to establish something that provides you money, pride, and a sense of purpose again, not to develop an empire overnight.
Resilience is also built this way. Learning to make money on your own, gives you confidence that no employer can take away. You start to realise that your time is powerful, your thoughts are worthwhile, and your abilities are transferable. Many laid-off employees who go on to launch small enterprises claim that it restored their creativity and sense of power.
Naturally, there are difficulties in becoming an entrepreneur. It requires consistency, resilience, perseverence, learning, and patience. However, nothing compares to the satisfaction of making something of your own, that helps you and possibly others. One chapter may have been ended by redundancy, but you may begin creating your own with products and services.
