ANOTHER JOB? redundancy empowerment - empowering redundant workers - empowering redundant staff - empowering redundant employees - making redundancy work for you - is redundancy a dead end? - is redundancy the end of the road? - making the most of redundancy - empowering the redundant worker - Jack Lookman - Rita Nnamani - Olayinka Carew - Jack Lookman Limited - Amebo - Ire o - Ire kabiti - Empowerment and Inspiration - Empowering And Inspiring Generations - Yinka Carew

After being laid off, it’s natural to begin looking for “another job.”  That’s the instinct—replace what’s gone as soon as possible.  However, sometimes the best move is a redirection rather than a replacement.

Before rushing to fill the gap, take a moment to consider whether you really want to return to the same type of role.  Or has this forced break revealed that I want something different—perhaps something more adaptable, creative, or purposeful?

There’s nothing wrong with seeking stability again, especially when money is tight.  However, it is common for people to take the first available job in order to avoid discomfort, only to find themselves unhappy again a year later.  Redundancy can be a rare reset button, so use it wisely.

Begin by evaluating your motivations.  If you miss your old job because of the community, consider looking for workplaces with more robust cultures.  If you valued routine and security, consider industries that provide consistency.  However, if you are primarily looking for structure, freelance or hybrid work may provide you with more freedom and focus.

Sometimes “another job” is not the only option.  It could be “another version of me at work.”  Perhaps now is the time to pursue a long-held interest.  Many UK professionals have used redundancy to transition into teaching, digital entrepreneurship, or consulting.  The beauty of the modern workplace is that career paths are no longer rigid.

You can also combine approaches, such as working part-time to maintain stability while starting something new on the side.  The goal is not to prove anything, but rather to progress.

If you decide to look for another job, be strategic.  Update your CV with a narrative that demonstrates growth, not loss.  Employers value transparency and resilience.  Redundancy should be framed as part of your evolution: “My role was made redundant, which gave me time to upskill and refocus on the direction I want to take next.”  That tone transforms what could be perceived as a setback into a strength.

Remember that “another direction” does not always imply radical change.  It could simply mean working in a different industry, organisation, or even in a different capacity (remote, part-time, contract).  What matters is alignment, which means that your next move reflects who you are becoming rather than who you were.
