A good mentor can shorten your recovery time after redundancy. They bring insight, encouragement, and wisdom from their own experiences. But finding the right mentor is just as important as having one.

The best mentors are not always the most well-known or successful—they are the ones who truly care about your development.  Begin by identifying others who have walked a similar path.  Perhaps someone who faced redundancy and started over to create something new.  These are the people who will understand your feelings, not just your goals.

Approach mentorship with humility and clarity.  Know exactly what you want out of it.  Are you looking for business advice, job hunting tips, or emotional support?  That clarity makes it easier to find the right match.  Mentors can be found on LinkedIn, through professional networks, or at local career centres.  Many UK organisations provide free mentoring for people looking to restart their careers.

Once you connect, be teachable. Listen more than you speak. But also, don’t idolise your mentor—learn from them and adapt lessons to your unique circumstances. The goal is not just to copy their path but to gain the insight to carve your own.

Mentorship after redundancy is like having a compass in a foggy landscape. It helps you find direction when everything feels uncertain. The right mentor will remind you of your worth, challenge your comfort zone, and guide you toward opportunities you didn’t even see before. In many ways, a mentor doesn’t just help you rebuild your career—they help you rebuild your confidence.
