A passion audit does not involve daydreams or exaggerated fantasies. It's a hands-on exploration of what motivates you, what feels meaningful, and what you'd like to do more of if given the opportunity. It's a question: "If I'm rebuilding my career, what would I want this next chapter to look and feel like?"
Redundancy often functions as a reset button. It breaks the routine enough to prompt you to ask more in-depth questions. Did you actually love what you were doing before? Was it consistent with your principles and long-term goals? Or were you just going through the motions because it was comfortable and safe?
Many people realise, only after redundancy, that they were surviving in jobs that no longer inspired them. So while it’s painful, it can also be a doorway into rediscovering your spark. Start your passion audit by remembering on times when you felt completely absorbed or proud, not necessarily related to your work. Perhaps you enjoyed mentoring younger employees, organising tasks, assisting clients, writing, repairing, teaching, or designing. These moments include clues.
Next, consider what irritates you or what difficulties you naturally seek to fix. Irritation is frequently used to disguise passion. For example, if you are frequently annoyed by poor communication at work, you may be genuinely committed to helping people connect more effectively. That's a precursor to something significant.
It also helps to reflect on childhood or early adulthood. What did you love before you were told to “be realistic”? Those early interests often point to our core passions — things that bring us joy even without external rewards.
Once you’ve gathered these clues, ask how they could show up in your new season. Maybe your passion connects directly to your current skills, or maybe it leads you into something new — like starting a small business, retraining, or combining multiple interests into a portfolio career.
The goal is not to pursue a perfect passion, but to create a meaningful path. Passion does not have to be loud and glamorous; it can also be calm, steady, and deeply satisfying. You do not have to transform your passion into a full-time employment right now. Begin small. Volunteer, take a short course, or try out an idea. Allow it to grow normally.
