38. JOB HUNTING - redundancy empowerment - empowering redundant workers - empowering redundant staff - empowering redundant employees - making redundancy work for you - is redundancy a dead end? - is redundancy the end of the road? - making the most of redundancy - empowering the redundant worker - Jack Lookman - Rita Nnamani - Olayinka Carew - Jack Lookman Limited - Amebo - Ire o - Ire kabiti - Empowerment and Inspiration - Empowering And Inspiring Generations - Yinka Carew

Job hunting following redundancy can feel like a full-time job in and of itself.  Even the most optimistic person can become discouraged by the constant applications, endless job boards, and occasional silence from employers.  However, with the right approach, job hunting can transform from an exhausting chore to a structured, strategic process that produces results.

Mindset is the first step.  Instead of viewing job hunting as begging for opportunities, consider it matchmaking.  You’re not just looking for any job; you’re looking for one that matches your skills, values, and goals with the needs of the employer.

That small mental shift alters everything. Start with clarity.  Define the type of work you want to do, the location, and the culture in which you thrive. This helps you filter out irrelevant roles and focus your energy.

Next, make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile are in top shape.  Tailor both to highlight your accomplishments as well as your experience.  Use active language that demonstrates outcomes: “led,” “developed,” “delivered.”  Employers want to see how you add value, not just what tasks you completed.

Networking is another game changer.  In the United Kingdom, many jobs are filled through connections and referrals rather than public listings.  Reach out to former colleagues, participate in LinkedIn discussions, attend virtual career events, and let people know you’re looking for new opportunities.  Most people want to help; they just need to know you’re available.

When applying, do not scatter your efforts.  Choose quality over quantity.  Create tailored cover letters that demonstrate genuine interest and understanding of the position. Recruiters can spot generic applications instantly. Personalising your message makes you memorable.

Interviews are where preparation pays off. Research the company’s culture, mission, and recent achievements. Prepare examples of challenges you’ve overcome, and practice articulating how redundancy became a growth phase for you — not a failure. That honesty often leaves a lasting impression.

Also, take advantage of job support services. Local Job Centres, online career coaches, and professional development programs across the UK offer free help with applications and interview prep. Use every resource you can.

While job hunting, structure your day. Treat it like work — set hours for searching, networking, and self-care. It keeps your mental health steady.
