Collaboration is effective, but only when done correctly. Following redundancy, you may be tempted to collaborate with anyone who has a similar vision. While collaboration can help you rebuild faster, choosing the wrong collaborators can drain your time, money, and energy. This is why it is critical to choose wisely.
Start by assessing alignment. Question: Do we have the same values, work ethic, and goals? Many collaborations fail because partners have different goals—one may be driven by passion, while the other is solely motivated by profit. The best collaborations are based on mutual respect and clarity. You don’t have to agree on everything, but you should be moving in the same direction.
Next, observe your communication style. Can you both be honest without getting offended? Can you engage in difficult conversations? Redundancy recovery already carries emotional weight, so you’ll need collaborators who bring calm and focus rather than chaos. Look for people who complement your weaknesses rather than mirroring them. If you’re a creative thinker, look for someone who specialises in structure or finance. If you are an executor, find a strategist.
Most importantly, formally establish your partnership. No matter how friendly or familiar things seem, always document roles, expectations, and financial arrangements. It prevents future misunderstandings. Also, don’t be afraid to say no if the collaboration doesn’t feel right. Protecting your peace is part of securing your future.
When you choose the right collaborators, rebuilding after a redundancy is easier. You share ideas, multiply your strengths, and rediscover the joy of teamwork. You stop walking alone, and in that shared journey, confidence quietly returns.
