When you are laid off, your entire being screams for quick results.  You want the next job right now.  You want the income to flow again.  You want to stop telling people you’re “still looking.”  It’s natural to crave immediate gratification, but rebuilding after redundancy often takes time, and learning to accept that is one of the most difficult but liberating aspects of the journey.

Immediate results are appealing because they reduce our anxiety.  They make us feel more in control.  However, chasing instant gratification can lead to short-term decisions that do not serve your long-term objectives.  You might accept the first job that comes your way, even if it doesn’t match your skills or goals.  You may overwork yourself, applying everywhere without strategy.

However, growth after redundancy often happens quietly before it happens visibly. The applications you’re sending, the interviews you’re attending, the skills you’re learning — all these steps are seeds. Just because you can’t see the results doesn’t mean they’re not forming beneath the surface.

The best way to deal with the urge for immediate results is to focus on consistency instead. Make small, daily progress that compounds over time. Spend an hour each day networking or applying for quality roles rather than mass-sending fifty rushed applications. Take time to tailor your CV for each role, and reflect after every interview to identify what went well and what to improve. These small habits create lasting outcomes.

Redundancy can also feel like a blow to your identity, leaving you eager for external validation.  You may feel pressured by family or friends to “get back out there” quickly.  Remember, you’re not just getting another job; you’re rebuilding your foundation.  Strong foundations take time to develop.

Consider this period to be similar to the healing process after an injury.  After a fall, you do not immediately run; instead, you rest, strengthen, and gradually rebuild muscle.  That’s what this phase is all about: purposeful recovery.

This does not mean you should sit back and do nothing.  It means you remain active but patient.  Monitor your progress.  Celebrate small wins, even the call-back that did not result in an offer.  Every step forward counts.

Also, don’t compare timelines.  Someone you know might get a job in two weeks.  Another may take six months.  That does not make one more capable than the other; it is simply a matter of timing and compatibility.

The best results—the ones that last—rarely occur overnight.  They stem from consistency, clarity, and courage.  You may not see immediate success, but if you stick with the process, the results will come in ways far better than you could have imagined.
