Being called for jury service is a culture shock for many immigrants in the United Kingdom. Nigerians are used to legal systems in which only specialists handle such matters, so this feels weird. Ordinary persons are called to sit in judgement on criminal matters, determining guilt or innocence.

Being called for jury duty indicates that the system recognises you as a member of society. If you are eligible and registered, you may be selected at random. It can be daunting, but it also represents an opportunity. You encounter the justice system firsthand, rather than as an observer. You realise that everyday people make decisions about their lives, not just judges or politicians. That says a lot about how responsibility is shared in the UK.

For Nigerians, this experience can instil discipline and justice. You can't approach cases with bias or sentiment. The law requires you to carefully consider the data and make an unbiased decision. It emphasises that in an organised society, justice is everyone's responsibility. It is not flawless, but it demonstrates trust in citizens to protect principles.

Some immigrants are uncomfortable with jury duty because they are afraid of taking on too much responsibility or because they lack comprehension. But the truth is that engagement helps you integrate. It demonstrates that you are trusted to play your role. Avoiding it or perceiving it as a bother stifles your social development. Even if you don't like it, doing it enhances your voice as a citizen.

Jury duty teaches a simple truth: in the UK, you are more than just a guest. You're part of the system. And systems are only strong when people play their roles. Taking on such obligations elevates Nigerians living abroad from outsiders to stakeholders.
