One of the realities of Japa is that demands from back home don’t stop. In fact, for many, they increase. Relatives see you abroad and assume you have endless money. Friends send requests. Parents call with needs. Communities back home expect contributions. It can feel like a never-ending drain, leaving you financially and emotionally stretched. Managing demands from the fatherland is one of the hardest parts of immigrant life, but it is also one of the most important skills to master.
The first step is understanding that you cannot meet every demand. You may want to, but it is not realistic. Life abroad is expensive, and your first responsibility is to stabilise yourself. Rent, bills, insurance, taxes—these swallow money quickly. If you send all your earnings home without planning for yourself, you will end up stranded. The truth is, you cannot help anyone effectively if you have not built your own stability first.
The second step is establishing limits. This entails being transparent about what you can and cannot accomplish. It is not wickedness, but wisdom. You can elect to send a set amount monthly or quarterly, but you can't keep responding to odd requests that throw your budget off track. Setting boundaries also entails saying "no" on occasion. Nigerians at home may not always understand, but you must prioritise sustainability. Nobody benefits from a financial breakdown.
Another method is empowerment. Instead of constantly sending money for consumption, consider ways to support long-term solutions. Assist relatives with business ideas, invest in education, or contribute to projects that alleviate repetitive responsibilities. This breaks the cycle of reliance and promotes empowerment.
Managing demands from the fatherland requires wisdom, balance, and courage. Don’t feel guilty for saying no. Don’t allow pressure to ruin your financial stability. Help where you can, but never at the cost of your future. Your first duty is to stand strong where you are so that you can truly be a blessing to others long term.
