It is easy to lose sight of yourself in the fast-paced world of the United Kingdom. Nigerians here frequently work multiple shifts to pay expenses, send money home, and make ends meet. But without times of meditation and mindfulness, you become a machine that runs but does not truly live. Reflection is the practice of pausing to assess where you are, whereas mindfulness is being present in the moment. They work together to create balance.
Submission, Gratitude, Faith and Hope
Reflection enables you to evaluate your journey. Every Nigerian abroad should question himself, "Why am I here?" Am I growing? Am I just surviving, or am I building? Without introspection, years can pass and you may discover that you are locked in the same routine. Pausing allows you to redirect your energy.

Mindfulness, on the other hand, focusses on appreciating the present moment. The weather may be cold, and the work may be difficult, but there is still delight in the simple things: a warm supper, laughter with family, or simply wandering in the park. Nigerians frequently live with their brains in two places—physically in the UK and mentally in Nigeria. Mindfulness allows you to fully live in the moment while also planning for the future.
The UK lifestyle can be demanding, and unmanaged stress can lead to health problems. Mindfulness practices, such as prayer, meditation, journaling, or quiet time, can help you cope with stress. Reflection then enables you to make deliberate decisions about whether to learn a new skill, change employment, or invest differently.
Reflection and mindfulness are survival tools, not luxuries. In a society driven by deadlines and schedules, the only way to avoid burnout is to check in with oneself on a frequent basis. When you reflect, you can learn. When you are conscious, you live. Combine the two, and you will prosper.
