Leadership is way beyond titles and job descriptions; it is about influence. As Nigerians in the UK, many of us underestimate our leadership potential. Leadership exploits are opportunities to influence, guide, and inspire those around you, regardless of your position. And in a nation like the UK, where institutions are already constructed; leadership is frequently about stepping forward to fill holes that others overlook.
Leadership can manifest itself in the workplace. It could involve mentoring new employees, being the voice of reason in meetings, or proposing solutions while others simply whine. In community spaces, it could mean organising cultural events, advocating for Nigerians in need, or simply being a bridge between newcomers and resources. Every act of leadership increases your visibility and credibility, and in the diaspora, credibility is currency.
Too many Nigerians believe that leadership means being a "big man" or "big woman." In reality, leadership feats are often quiet but effective. They are about honesty, responsibility, and courage. If others can trust you, you are already leading. If your actions inspire others, you are already a leader. The United Kingdom honours those who take responsibility. Leadership here is about service, not ego.

Leadership also improves your personal development. When you take the initiative, you challenge yourself. You learn unexpected skills such as communication, conflict resolution, organisation, and resilience. These talents then lead to opportunities for career growth, community esteem, and even political power. Nigerians who establish themselves as leaders overseas frequently become voices that others cannot ignore.
So, don’t shy away from leadership. Don’t think it is reserved for politicians or CEOs. Every day presents small exploits where you can show leadership. It could be at work, at the religious organisation, in your neighbourhood, or even within your family. Take those opportunities, and make positive impact.
