English may be Nigeria's official language, but living in the UK teaches you that there is "Nigerian English" and "British English." Many Nigerians arrive and are surprised by the differences in accents, pronunciations, and even common words.

Strong English abilities have an impact on practically all aspects of life. At work, it can mean the difference between being promoted and remaining at your current position. In school, it can mean the difference between passing tests and struggling indefinitely. In social situations, it can determine whether you are included or disregarded. Nigerians who ignore the need to improve their English frequently miss out on chances, not because they are not intelligent, but because they are unable to communicate effectively in their current setting.

Simple factors like pronunciation, tone, and vocabulary make a significant difference. If you mispronounce a word or use the incorrect term in the wrong context, you can create unnecessary barriers. Fortunately, there are free and affordable options to learn and improve your English available everywhere; including community classes, online courses, and even libraries. The question is, are you humble enough to learn?

Many Nigerians are defensive about this. They'll argue, "But English is my official language." True, but the point isn't pride; it's adaptation. When you improve your English, you become easier to comprehend, and people value clarity. It's not about imitating an accent; it's about being articulate. Nigerians with great communication skills in the UK tend to rise faster, because they can bridge cultural and professional divides. So, make it a goal to keep learning. Read widely. Listen carefully. Practise daily. Even if you feel confident in your English, there is always room for improvement.
