One of the most effective methods to prepare for the realities of migration is to listen to the stories of people who have gone before you. These anecdotes, whether good or horrible, are more than just entertainment; they are lessons, roadmaps, and warnings about what to expect in a place that does not operate on "Nigerian time" or "man-know-man."
Listening to others' experiences prevents you from duplicating their mistakes. For example, someone who arrived here and battled with qualifications that were not recognised can spare you years of following a dead end. Another person's tale of how they become involved in their community can help you avoid loneliness. In fact, by simply paying attention to the lived realities of Nigerians abroad, you begin to understand that migration is not the fairy tale but a combination of bitter, sweet, and everything in between.
Your story as a migrant will be important. One day, someone else will profit from your experience. That's why you need to live consciously, document your experience, and reflect frequently. Migration will test your identity, values, and sense of belonging. But when you perceive yourself as part of a larger story—one in which you are not only surviving but also paving the way for those who follow—you begin to draw power from it.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
We must normalise sharing. Too many of us suffer in silence because we don't want others to see our struggles. However, when we communicate, people realise they are not alone. Sharing experiences does not imply exposing your private life; rather, it involves providing individuals with information that can help them. For example, how to navigate the NHS, how to survive winter, or even how to deal with micro-aggressions at work. These little nuggets make a big difference.
And if this is well done, apart from positively impacting others, you might even earn financial rewards.
