The school run is one of the first realities that will hit you when you arrive in the UK with children. Unlike back home where schools may be a walking distance or where family members can easily help out; here, it’s a structured process. Parents are expected to ensure their children get to school safely and on time. In most areas, there are strict rules around drop-offs, pick-ups and even parking around schools. It might feel overwhelming at first, but once you understand the system, it becomes second nature.

One major thing to note is punctuality. Schools in the UK take time very seriously, so arriving late consistently can lead to warnings or even fines. This is not like Nigeria where lateness might be waved off with excuses. Here, it can affect your child’s attendance record and your reputation as a responsible parent. It’s important to plan your mornings and evenings properly to avoid unnecessary stress. Many parents use walking, buses, carpools, or public transport to manage the school run.

Another crucial consideration is safety. Safeguarding is emphasised in UK schools, therefore only recognised parents or guardians can collect children. If you send someone else without prior warning, expect the school to interrogate you or refuse to release your child. It is not intended to frustrate you, but rather for the child's protection. It is also necessary to wear a seatbelt, heed traffic regulations near schools, and adhere to parking limits. Fines for noncompliance are severe, and ignorance will not protect you.

Being Organised

You will also need to consider after-school activities and daycare. If your job hours clash with pick-up times, you may require after-school clubs or childminders, which are costly. The earlier you plan for these, the less stress you will experience later.
