Learning how to conduct effective web research can help Nigerians living overseas save time, money, and stress. It can be risky for many people to rely solely on WhatsApp broadcasts or rumours from friends. One person's experience might not be typical for others. Rather, you must learn how to do your own research. In the areas of employment, education, immigration, and even housing, a quick Google search may uncover opportunities you were unaware of.
Choosing the appropriate keywords is the first guideline of internet research. Millions of results will appear if you type "jobs in UK" into a search bar. However, your results will be more focused and helpful if you enter in "entry-level care jobs for immigrants in London 2025." Always narrow down your search to what you want, where you want it, and when you want it. This applies to almost every area—whether you’re searching for scholarships, affordable groceries, or cheap transport routes. The clearer your query, the better your results.

You also need to understand how to recognise reliable websites. Not all of the websites you click on are trustworthy. Some are frauds, intended to defraud immigrants who are in dire need of work. Keep an eye out for legitimate government websites, which typically finish in .gov or.org. Check university websites directly rather than through intermediaries for education. Reliable job portals, such as Indeed or LinkedIn, are preferable to sporadic advertisements. Additionally, before acting, always double-check information from two or three different sources.
People with first-hand knowledge can answer your queries on sites like YouTube, Quora, and even LinkedIn professional groups. Although social media has risks, it can also be effective if used properly. Join immigrant forums, Nigerian community groups, and professional associations online. The discussions there can guide you faster than trying to figure things out alone.
