Neighbours abroad are not like neighbours at home. In Nigeria, your neighbour may be like family—you share meals, gist, and even duties. Neighbours abroad can be distant, polite, or utterly invisible. That is not to say that connections are impossible; rather, they must be developed differently. The way you engage with your neighbours might have an impact on your tranquilly, safety, and integration.
In many Western societies, privacy is paramount. Your neighbour may smile and greet you, but he or she will not automatically become your friend. Some people choose to keep their distance totally. Don't see it as hostility; it's just a cultural difference. However, being friendly and respectful can go a long way. A simple "hello," minimising noise, and respecting public areas, can foster goodwill that can benefit you in the long run.
Neighbours can also be allies. They may look out for your house when you travel, help during emergencies, or provide information about local services. But trust takes time. Don’t rush. Build gradually by being consistent, approachable, and considerate. Nigerians abroad sometimes clash with neighbours over issues like noise, parking, or waste. These conflicts can escalate if handled poorly. Respecting rules and being proactive avoids unnecessary tension.

At the same time, don’t lose your Nigerian warmth. If your neighbours are open, invite them to cultural events, share food during celebrations, and create bonds. Cultural exchange enriches both sides. Some neighbours may never go beyond “good morning,” but others may become lifelong friends.

In the end, neighbours abroad are what you make of them. Don’t expect Nigeria-style closeness, but don’t shut the door to connection either. Be respectful, be approachable, and build bridges where possible. A good neighbour can make life abroad far easier.
