Unlike in Nigeria, where job losses are sometimes abrupt or without reason, redundancy in the UK is more structured—it implies your position is no longer necessary. It could be the result of corporate reorganisation, cost-cutting measures, or economic shifts. However, while it may appear subtle, the impact is significant. Losing a job in a foreign country can feel like the ground has been ripped from beneath you.
Redundancy does not imply that you were incompetent. In most cases, it has little to do with your performance and everything to do with business requirements. However, if you are unprepared, the emotional and financial costs can be overwhelming. This is why any Nigerian in the UK must be aware that jobs here do not last forever. You must always have a plan B—savings, side skills, or a backup plan—because the system does not slow down to pity anyone.

The UK does, however, provide support structures. Depending on how long you've worked, you may be eligible for redundancy pay, notice periods, or assistance in finding a new job. It is critical to understand your rights, so you do not walk away empty-handed. Many Nigerians take redundancy silently because of fear or ignorance, unaware that the law protects them. Always ask questions, consult HR, and seek expert counsel before signing any documents.
Redundancy can have a negative impact on your confidence, in addition to financial consequences. It makes you question your relevance. Remember that redundancy is not rejection, but rather redirection. Following redundancy, many Nigerians have discovered new occupations with higher pay and more meaningful routes. The key is to maintain an open mind and a willingness to retrain or reposition.
And if things become extremely difficult, there are safety nets like welfare benefits, which could be a stop gap before you regain your balance.
