If you intend to Japa or are presently overseas, one of the skills you must have, is understanding what to talk about and when. Many Nigerians miss out on chances, because they lack the ability to engage in meaningful conversations. In a world where communication is essential, your talking points can either open or close doors.
For example, at work, people are listening to how you convey your thoughts, rather than just observing your performance. Do you know how to contribute meaningfully in meetings? Can you describe your abilities without downplaying yourself? These talking points are not about brags; they are about establishing yourself, so that others recognise your worth.
Talking points also matter socially. You must know how to connect with people, without being awkward. You may not care about football, but learning a few things about the Premier League can save you in small talk. Being able to discuss weather, culture, or even current affairs makes it easier to blend in, and be seen as approachable. Sometimes, the difference between being isolated and being integrated, is just knowing how to hold a conversation.

But you must also guard your tongue. Not every gist is worth joining. Some talking points—like politics, religion, or race—require wisdom. What you say can either build bridges or burn them. That’s why immigrants must develop discernment, knowing what to say in different settings.

The truth is, talking points are more than simply words. They're tools. They can help you improve your reputation, provide new chances, and even defend you. If you are a Nigerian living abroad, do not underestimate the importance of understanding what to say, how to say it, and when to remain silent.
