One of the common mistakes people make when relocating is depending too heavily on one path. Maybe it’s relying only on one job, one source of income, or one plan. But living abroad quickly teaches you that putting all your eggs in one basket can be risky. Life throws surprises, and flexibility often determines how well you cope.
For many immigrants, their first instinct is to stick to one plan. Perhaps it's one career that covers the bills, one neighbourhood you feel at ease in, or one restricted vision of how life "must" work out. The trouble is that if just one basket breaks, your entire life can feel like it's crumbling. A job loss, a sudden illness, or even a change in immigration legislation can all have a major impact.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Think about your career. It's easy to focus solely on your current work, but what if it disappears? Upskilling, retraining, Entrepreneurship, or acquiring other skills gives you alternatives. Many people abroad start tiny side enterprises, freelance, or learn trades to supplement their income. The same goes for your social life. Relying solely on a small group can limit you. Expand your network by connecting with locals, colleagues, neighbours, and others from various backgrounds. This not only enhances your experience, but also establishes a support network. When one circle feels shaky, another might provide support.
At its core, this principle is about flexibility. Life overseas is unpredictable, but if your eggs are distributed strategically, no single setback can derail your progress. Putting all of your eggs in one basket may appear to be a safe bet at first, but it is ultimately perilous. Build various streams, expand your networks, and remain versatile. That way, you don't just withstand shocks; you overcome them.
