One of the quickest paths to adaptability in any new country is language. Nigerians may believe they already have an advantage when they go to English-speaking nations like the UK, but the reality is sometimes different. In the beginning, communication can be challenging due to accents, slangs, and phrases. The difficulty increases if you relocate to a nation where English is not the primary language.
Immersion is the first piece of advice. Immerse yourself in daily use rather than relying solely on apps or concepts learnt in the classroom. Keep up with the news, tune in to local radio stations, and watch local television programs. Pay attention to the pronunciation and context of words. Observe how people place their orders if you're in a store. On public transport, notice how people ask questions. The more you expose yourself, the faster you’ll pick up.
Second, don't be afraid to practise. Speaking in public makes many Nigerians nervous because they fear making errors or drawing ridicule. However, language only gets better when you use it. Order meals, say hello to your neighbours, and ask for directions as a starting point. Your effort is appreciated even if your pronunciation or grammar is not perfect. The majority of locals actually value visitors who make an effort. The learning curve includes every error.

Additionally, technology is on your side. You may learn vocabulary and pronunciation at your own pace with the aid of apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or even YouTube lessons. Add community classes provided by mosques, churches, councils, or immigrant support groups to this. Free or extremely inexpensive language classes are available in many locations, and they can lead to improved communication and greater employment opportunities. If you’re in an English-speaking country but struggling with accent barriers, online pronunciation tools can polish your speech and make you more confident.
