When you move abroad, temptation dresses differently. Back home, it may have been bribery, cutting costs, or seeking shortcuts, but in the UK or other Western societies, temptation is often disguised as opportunity. It can be the desire to misrepresent your immigration status, abuse government benefits, or betray the principles you formerly held dear. At first, it appears to be a way to survive, but it gradually chips away at your integrity.

Many Nigerians fall into the trap of thinking “everybody is doing it.” They hear stories of people deceiving systems, evading taxes, or exploiting loopholes, and believe it is the only way to survive. However, they forget that in these countries, the law has a long memory. You may enjoy the fruit of shortcuts today, but years down the line, it can come back to haunt you. Losing your job, your freedom, or even your residency because of temptation is not worth the risk.

Temptation also comes in personal choices. Loneliness can drive people into unhealthy relationships. Financial pressure can tempt you into gambling or risky money schemes. Stress can lead to substance abuse and irresponsible behaviour. The truth is that no one is immune. Regardless of how disciplined you are, if you do not set boundaries, temptation will quietly sneak in and take control. That’s why you have to constantly remind yourself why you left Nigeria in the first place.

Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration

One way to resist temptation is to surround yourself with accountability. Do not isolate yourself. Create a circle of friends who share your values and can hold you accountable when you stray. Some people find accountability through their faith community. For others, it comes from close friends or mentors. Either way, you need people who can remind you of the bigger picture when the heat of the moment makes you want to compromise.
