One of the most shocking aspects of Japa is realising that what you thought you knew, may not be enough. Life abroad is based on lessons, and the sooner you learn them, the smoother your path will be. The most crucial lesson is humility. Titles have less weight abroad than they do in Nigeria. Your degree, contacts, and "status" may not automatically translate into success. What matters is adaptation, gaining new skills, and respecting systems.
Another lesson is the importance of time. In Nigeria, lateness is frequently excused as "African time." Time is money abroad, and being late is considered disrespectful. If your shift starts at 9, arriving at 9:05 may jeopardise your job. If you book an appointment for 2 p.m., arriving at 2:10 can mean losing the slot entirely. Time management is not just about discipline; it is about survival.
There is also a lesson on financial discipline. Money enters your account with perspiration and disappears faster than you anticipate. Rent, bills, taxes, transportation, fines, and insurance—all add up rapidly. The key takeaway here is to budget carefully, save consistently, and avoid excessive debt. Many Nigerians fall into the trap of trying to impress others or sending money home without considering their own future. The lesson is about balance. You can't pour from an empty cup. Before taking on additional responsibilities, learn to manage your finances.
Many people neglect the importance of mental health. Living abroad can be lonely, difficult, and stressful. In Nigeria, community protects you from some difficulties, but outside, isolation is real. The lesson is to build strong support systems, stay connected with positive people, and don’t be ashamed to seek help when needed. Mental strength is what will keep you standing when challenges pile up. Learn to protect your mind just as you protect your body.
