Parenting in the UK differs significantly from Nigeria. Back home, the community frequently raises the child. Neighbours, aunties, uncles, and even strangers on the street are welcome to reprimand or guide your children. In the United Kingdom, the structure is far more individualised, and the system provides children with rights that many Nigerian parents are unfamiliar with. This means that you cannot raise your children based solely on community pressure. You must be intentional, present, and smart in establishing principles while adhering to the laws and culture of your new setting.
One of the most difficult aspects of parenting for Nigerians is discipline. In Nigeria, a parent may physically discipline their child and interpret it as love. In the UK, that same action may be labelled abuse. You must adjust your methods without losing your authority. It is not about being harsh but about being wise. Communication, firm boundaries, and consistency matter more here. If you are not careful, the system can step in and take over, and that is not a place you want to be as a parent. Parenting here requires wisdom to blend Nigerian values with British expectations.

Another difficulty is cultural identity. Nigerian youngsters raised in the UK are frequently caught between two realities. At home, they are expected to respect elders, speak their own language, and accept Nigerian customs. Outside, they are immersed in British culture, language, and values. If you're not careful, your children may grow up to reject one side in favour of another. The key is to strike a balance between instilling pride in their background and assisting them in successfully integrating. Allow them to learn about their roots while also providing them with the skills they need to thrive in their current society.

Parenting entails being there, despite the demands of work. Many Nigerians work long hours or several jobs, leaving children with greater influence from the system than from their parents. That absence often shows in behaviour, values, and choices. Money is important, but your presence is priceless. Quality time, involvement in their education, and genuine interest in their daily lives will build a foundation no amount of gifts can replace. Parenting abroad requires sacrifice of not just money but also time and attention.
