In the diaspora, one of the most ignored behaviours that may make or destroy you, is discretion. Nigerians love to chat. We discuss our plans, moves, achievements, and even disappointments. But the UK is not Nigeria. People here measure you based on what you show and share. Sometimes saying less gives you more influence over your life.
Openness can be costly. Someone else could take and exploit the concept you carelessly shared. That financial difficulty you reveal may become talk. That personal plan you announced may face unwanted opposition before it even matures. Privacy is extremely valuable in the UK. The fewer people know about your financial status, your immigration details, or your career strategy, the more peace you will enjoy. Not everyone who smiles at you wishes you well.
Even in small circles, there is wisdom in silence. Friends today may become strangers tomorrow. Business partners may become competitors. Neighbours may become complainants. It is not about paranoia; it is about equilibrium. Share what is necessary for teamwork, but keep personal information private until it is time to expose it.
The truth is that the UK operates on systems that respect limits. People are not as curious or intrusive as they are in Nigeria, yet opening yourself up unduly invites unwanted attention. A secret is only effective when it remains secret. When you release it, you lose control over it. If you want to preserve your future, start by protecting your tongue.
So, as you live and navigate this society, practise discretion. Let your success announce itself, not your words. Let your results do the talking. Remember, not every testimony is ready for the public, and not every achievement needs an audience. Keeping your secret, secret may be one of the smartest survival skills you must master abroad.
