Nigerians in the UK, and even at home, occasionally fall into the trap of declaring, "I've been here for 20 years," as if the number alone is proof of achievement. However, the length of time you live, work, or remain abroad does not guarantee a fulfilling existence. The true question is not "how long" but "how well." How effectively are you utilising your time, opportunities, and influence?
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Take a look at employment, relationships, or community service. Someone may spend 30 years in a career but depart without leaving a lasting legacy, but another may spend only 10 years in the same function yet leave behind systems, people, and memories that will last. This is why some people who live fewer years, leave more impact than those who live longer. Think about inventors, leaders, or activists who didn’t live to old age but are still remembered decades later. Their lives remind us that depth, not just length, matters.
The danger of focusing only on “how long” is that it breeds complacency. You’ll hear people say, “I’ve been in the UK since the 90s” as if that alone is an achievement. But if after all those years you haven’t developed skills, raised your children well, or positioned yourself financially, what is there to show? On the other hand, someone who arrived only five years ago but invested wisely, studied hard, and built networks may be miles ahead.
This also applies to relationships and personal values. Some people brag about being married for 30 years, but behind the closed doors, there is no peace, no love, no growth. Compare that to a couple married for a shorter time but deeply supportive of each other and raising desirable children. It’s not the number of years together that defines the marriage—it’s the quality. In friendships, in work, in service to God or community, what matters is not how long you’ve been present, but how well you’ve shown up. The essence of life is in the “quality,” not just the “quantity.”
