Traditionally, many cultures tied a woman’s value in marriage to her ability to cook. A “good wife” was often judged by her skill in the kitchen. But relocation changes things. In the UK, life is faster, gender roles are more fluid, and takeout or ready meals are part of the culture. Here, cooking is no longer strictly a woman’s responsibility—it’s a shared duty between partners. So yes, a woman could be a bad cook and still be an excellent wife, if she brings other qualities like kindness, wisdom, partnership, and emotional support.

That said, food still matters. Meals carry culture and comfort, especially abroad. A partner who cannot cook may not be “bad,” but they will miss an opportunity to bond and create home-like experiences. A good marriage thrives when partners are willing to learn for each other’s sake. Even if one isn’t naturally skilled, effort shows love. A husband who learns to cook for his wife, or a wife who tries to improve her cooking for her family, demonstrates partnership.
The bigger point is this: marriage is not about one skill, but about shared values. Cooking can be learned, but character, loyalty, and respect cannot. A “bad cook” can hire help, order food, or learn slowly. But a bad partner, no matter how talented in the kitchen, will create misery. Abroad, where support systems are fewer, and challenges heavier, what matters most is not perfect meals but teamwork.
So, could a bad cook be a good wife? Absolutely. But a better question is: could a selfish partner be a good spouse? The answer to that is no. Skills are secondary—attitude, love, and support are what truly hold a marriage together, whether at home or in a foreign land.
