Many Nigerians avoid discussing life insurance because it seems morbid. Nobody enjoys thinking about dying, especially if they have recently relocated abroad in search of a better life. The truth, however, is that life insurance is about protection rather than death. It is about securing your family's future in case something unforeseen occurs. Ignoring it doesn't make life any safer; planning for it makes you wiser.
Living abroad comes with obligations. You may have dependents at home or a family living with you. You may have debts, a mortgage, or outstanding invoices. Life insurance ensures that if something happens to you, your loved ones will not be left alone. It gives financial stability, allowing them to continue without being thrown into chaos.
Insurance is also part of establishing credibility abroad. Many systems, including mortgages and certain jobs, need confirmation of life insurance. It indicates that you are responsible and financially literate. It may not be required for everyone, but it is strongly suggested. Premiums are typically reasonable, particularly if you begin early, and the benefits far outweigh the costs. Don't wait until you're older or have health problems to consider it. By then, it may be more difficult or expensive to secure.

One widespread misperception is that insurance firms "chop people's money." That may be true in Nigeria at times, but the sector is strictly regulated elsewhere. Policies are clear, payouts are consistent, and consumer rights are respected. As long as you understand the terms, and pay your premiums, you can be rest assured that the system will work when it is needed.
Life insurance is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. It shows that you are not just living for today but planning for tomorrow. As a Nigerian abroad, one of the greatest gifts you can give your family is the assurance that, come what may, they will be okay. That is the true meaning of security.
