Many Nigerians want to earn pounds before they Japa. It seems glamorous: one pound equals hundreds of naira, so life will undoubtedly be smooth. However, earning in pounds is considerably different once you live in the UK. The conversion only makes sense when sending money home. In the United Kingdom, pounds behave similarly to naira—they run out rapidly when expenses accumulate.

One of the first surprises is how rapidly money evaporates. Rent alone can consume a third or more of your pay. When you add council tax, transport, utilities, food and insurance, you end up with significantly less than you expected. Yes, you earn in pounds, but you also spend in pounds—and spending in pounds is just as draining as spending in naira, only more structured.
Another reality is that "earning in pounds" is generally associated with difficult occupations. Many of Nigeria's entry-level jobs are physically demanding, such as care work, warehouse shifts, deliveries, cleaning, or night shifts. The money may look nice on paper, but the effort involved is equally significant. The dream of easy money in pounds fades swiftly when your body feels the strain of effort.

The third reality is responsibility. Because the naira is weak, the instant you earn in pounds, your family's expectations rise dramatically. You become the person they look to for everything, including tuition, medical bills, and indulgences. This pressure makes you feel as if your money isn't your own. Because of these expectations, many Nigerians living abroad are constantly under financial stress.
Earning in pounds is not a golden ticket to wealth. It is a tool, but only if you manage it wisely. Those who budget, save, invest, and live within their means thrive. Those who live carelessly, trying to impress both in the UK and in Nigeria, find themselves struggling despite earning in a strong currency.
