Many Nigerians arrive in the UK conscious of their rights but not of their responsibilities. Both should be balanced. The UK is a systems-based society, with rules, policies, and institutions in place to keep things in order. Knowing your rights keeps you safe from abuse. Knowing your rights helps you avoid trouble.

Your rights include equal treatment at work, protection from discrimination, access to healthcare, and the freedom to practise your religion. These are strong, and you must never let ignorance or fear deprive you of them. Many immigrants suffer in quiet because they are unsure what the law says. If you are the victim of injustice, you have options for seeking assistance. Use them.

Responsibilities, however, are equally important. You must pay your taxes, follow the law, respect public property, and contribute positively to society. Nigerians who ignore these face unwarranted legal consequences. Dodging council tax or TV licence fees, for example, may appear to be minor offences, but they can result in serious consequences. The system is designed to catch up with you eventually.

Rights and responsibilities are inextricably linked in partnerships. You have the right to marry, but you also need to respect your partner. You have the right to raise your children, but it is also your responsibility to provide sufficient care for them. Nigerians who focus solely on rights frequently conflict with the system. Balance is essential.

The UK thrives because people understand both sides of the coin. As a Nigerian living abroad, success is more than just understanding what you are owed. It is about meeting your duties. When rights and obligations align, you become recognised, trusted, and fully integrated into society.
