Noise levels abroad differ from those in Nigeria. Loud neighbours, car horns, religious crusades, and generators are all commonplace in my hometown. However, abroad, noise is treated very seriously—to the point where what you consider typical may be deemed a crime. Many Nigerians learn the hard way when their neighbours complain and the authorities intervene.

The first thing you should know is that silence is prized in many countries. Nights are intended to be tranquil, and even days have limitations. Loud music, fighting at excessive volumes, or operating noisy devices at strange hours might result in penalties or police visits. What you could call "just vibes" could be interpreted as disrupting the peace. Nigerians abroad must therefore unlearn the habit of living loud and learn to adapt to quieter norms.

Noise pollution affects not only your neighbours, but also you. Noisy settings can disrupt your sleep, concentration, and mental wellness. The quietness abroad may seem unusual at first, but it also provides tranquilly, allowing you to think clearly and refresh. Learning to enjoy the peace is part of the adjustment process. It does not imply that you lose your Nigerian energy; rather, you channel it in ways that are appropriate to the system. Celebrate appropriately, but also respect boundaries.

Noise awareness is especially crucial for Nigerian business owners who operate abroad. A hair salon with loud music, a restaurant with rowdy patrons, or a flat where people party late into the night can rapidly draw trouble. Noise control is part of professional behaviour. Customers and neighbours expect it. Adapting doesn’t mean silencing culture—it means balancing enjoyment with compliance so that your business can grow without unnecessary conflict.
