Racism is an issue that cannot be overlooked when living in the diaspora. The question is not whether it exists; it does; but if all Nigerians living abroad would have the same experience. The answer is "no." Experiences differ depending on where you live, the groups you frequent, and how you conduct yourself. However, it is essential to psychologically prepare, so that when it occurs, you are not frightened.
Some Nigerians may go years without experiencing evident racism. They reside in several locations, work in ethnic settings, and easily fit in. For them, the UK exudes warmth and inclusion. Others, however, may experience subtle biases, such as being ignored for promotions, being assessed based on their accent, or being treated differently in stores. In more extreme cases, some may encounter open hostility in certain towns or neighbourhood’s less exposed to diversity. So, racism is not equally distributed; it depends on many factors.

It is important to recognise the difference between systematic racism and personal prejudice. Systemic racism shows itself in institutional structures such as housing, job applications, and policing. It may not always be evident, but it has the potential to impact chances. Personal prejudice, on the other hand, refers to people who may look down on you because of your skin colour or ethnicity. Both exist, but understanding how to manage them is critical, to survive without bitterness.
The way you answer is equally important. If you are continually expecting racism, you may interpret every unfavourable interaction via that lens, even if it is not the case. However, if you are blind to it, you may overlook significant obstacles. Balance is needed. Carry yourself with confidence, stay excellent in what you do, and surround yourself with supportive communities. Excellence may not erase racism, but it gives you resilience against it.

Another point to note, is that when it comes to racism, people usually think of certain racial profiles. The truth is that it probably happens across divides. The important thing is to effectively manage it when it rears its head, and take steps to avoid or confront it.
