Debt is one of the silent destroyers of peace in the diaspora. It sneaks in quietly, via credit cards, loans, car financing, or even overpaying on minor purchases. Before you know it, your pay cheques are gone before they even arrive.
The first stage is awareness. You must understand exactly how much you owe and to whom. Many Nigerians avoid dealing with their loans because it feels burdensome. But you cannot battle something you refuse to confront. Keep track of everything: credit cards, loans, phone contracts, and retail financing. Clarity is the first weapon in debt management. Once you’ve determined the figures, you can plan your attack.
The second phase Is prioritising. Not all debts are identical. High-interest debts, such as payday loans or credit cards, should be settled as soon as possible. They exhaust you the fastest. Other debts, such as school loans or low-interest financing, can be controlled through scheduled instalments. Concentrate your energy where it hurts the most. Paying the bare minimum on all bills may feel comfortable, but it will keep you in debt for longer.

Third, try to compromise wherever feasible. In the United Kingdom, lenders are often willing to negotiate repayment schedules provided you communicate. Ignoring letters and calls just exacerbates the situation. If you’re having trouble, call them, explain your position, and come to a mutually acceptable solution. You’ll be astonished by how much relief this can provide.

Finally, change your spending habits. Debt management without lifestyle adjustment is like pouring water into a basket. Cut unnecessary expenses, learn to delay gratification, and resist pressure to keep up with appearances. Remember, debt thrives on ignorance and pride. Knowledge and humility are your escape routes. If you can discipline yourself, debt will not define your diaspora journey. Instead, you will free your finances to build the future you actually want.
