Life has a tendency to overwhelm us with routines, duties, and blunders. For many immigrants, their time overseas might feel like a haze of labour, bills, and constant sacrifice. At some point, you stop and wonder: Is it too late to reorganise my life? The good news is that as long as you can breathe, it is not too late. Life can always be reorganised, refocused, and moulded, no matter how far down the road you believe you have travelled.

Clarification is the first step towards reorganising your life. Many people are busy, but what are they doing? You cannot reorder items that have not been appraised. Take stock of your current financial, spiritual, mental, and physical situation. What works? What is broken? What needs pruning? This is not about shame, but about honesty. If you have spent years chasing shadows, now is the time to refocus on what truly matters.

Second, re-ordering takes bravery. Courage to admit mistakes, courage to break free from harmful cycles, and courage to alter your course. Too many Nigerians overseas are caught up in the race to survive, forgetting that life is more than bills and appearances. You can opt to slow down, prioritise your health, deepen your faith, or finally start that business or project you've been putting off. Courage is the fuel that drives reordering.

Third, don't underestimate the value of tiny steps. Some people associate re-ordering with significant, dramatic change. Not necessarily. Sometimes it's as simple as making a budget, joining a gym, devoting an hour to prayer or reading, or enrolling in a class. These little decisions, stacked over time, create a re-ordered life that feels purposeful and balanced. Do not despise the power of steady, consistent change.

And one quiet point to note, is that as you make your little efforts, help will normally come from known or unknown sources.

122. IS IT TOO LATE TO PREPARE FOR OLD AGE? Jack’s Japa Empowerment - Nijaa Diaspora Empowerment - Baba Londoner - Jack Lookman

After decades of working, striving, and creating, it becomes clear that retirement is closer than expected. The anxiety that it will be too late to plan for old age is significant, particularly for those who believe they have not done enough. However, the truth is that, while the ideal time to prepare was yesterday, the next best moment is now. It is never too late to start.

Jack Lookman’s Courses

Money is important in preparing for old age, but it is not the only consideration. It's about safety, comfort, and dignity. Whether you are in the United Kingdom or back in Nigeria, the reality is that old age without preparing can be devastating. In the UK, the system may offer support, but it is not always enough, and in Nigeria, the lack of structure means you must rely heavily on your personal resources. The wise immigrant will stop putting off the conversation and face it squarely. What will sustain you when you can no longer work? Where will you live? Who will care for you?

Investments, pensions, savings, and insurance are all practical responses to this topic. It is not sufficient to have just one. Diversify. If you do not already have a pension plan, start one now, no matter how late it feels. If you have merely been saving, consider making investments that will outperform inflation. Think beyond money and invest in relationships. Your network, family, and community will be important as you get older, because loneliness may be just as damaging as a lack of money.

Many Nigerians overseas make the mistake of focussing just on the present. The never-ending cycle of bills, remittances, and short-term necessities might make it difficult to notice how quickly time passes. But take a moment to think. Even if you are 50 or 60, with the right planning, you still have 20 to 30 years to live. That is a long time to either struggle or to enjoy peace, depending on how you plan now.
