Interviews offer access to employment, prospects, and advancement abroad. However, many Nigerians struggle with interviews because they approach them in the same way they would a casual talk at home. The UK system is structured, and interviews are more than just what you can accomplish; they are also about how you present it. If you don't perfect interview skills, you'll keep receiving rejection emails even if you're qualified for the position.
The first principle is preparation. Too many people wing interviews, believing that confidence will get them through. Confidence helps, but preparation wins. Research the organisation, understand the function, and consider how your experience matches their requirements. Employers are looking for specifics that demonstrate your understanding of their business, not general answers.
Communication is equally crucial. Long stories and ambiguous statements are not appropriate in international interviews. You must be clear, concise, and organised. Learn how to respond to competency-based questions using frameworks such as STAR (Situation, Task, Action, and Result). This demonstrates to employers that you have not only completed the work, but also understand the consequences of your actions. If you ramble or appear hesitant, they will conclude you are not a good fit.
Body language also communicates. In the UK, eye contact, posture, and tone are important. Employers are not only listening to your words; they are reading your confidence. Sit upright, make strong eye contact, and communicate clearly. Practice, if necessary. Remember that interviews are about both presentation and content. You may know your stuff, but if you cannot present it well, you will be overlooked.
Finally, see interviews as two-way conversations. Don't just beg for a job; show interest, ask questions, and be curious. Employers reward candidates who perceive themselves as contributors rather than job seekers. With good interview skills, you can avoid approaching interviews with dread and instead approach them with authority.
