The idea of “Japa” has become the anthem of many Nigerians. The promise of better opportunities, better living conditions, and a better future abroad, is so attractive that many see it as the ultimate solution to life’s struggles. But is Japa truly a bed of roses? The honest answer is no. It is a bed, but not always roses. Sometimes it is thorns, sometimes it is a mix of both.

Jack’s Mindset

The first reality check is that life abroad is not automatic paradise. There are bills, long hours, cultural shock, and a constant sense of having to prove yourself. The glamour people see online often hides the grind. Behind the pictures of snow and summer vacations are sleepless nights, double shifts, and the mental weight of being far from home. Those who think Japa is an escape, often find that new challenges replace old ones.

What are your thoughts?

Another reality is the struggle for one's identity. You may be respected abroad, but you are almost never totally accepted. Regardless of how long you remain, you are frequently referred to as "the immigrant." That reality has a negative impact on self-esteem and might lead many Nigerians to question where they genuinely belong. It serves as a subtle but persistent reminder that Japa is not all roses.

What is your mindset?

Financially, Japa is also complex. Yes, there may be more opportunities to earn, but there are also more costs. Taxes, rent, fines, and the pressure to send money home quickly offset whatever advantages you acquire. Many immigrants discover that, while their foreign income appears to be good on paper, their savings tell a different story. Without discipline, you can end up living pay check to pay check just as you did back home.
