Many Nigerians believe that once they get in the UK, everything becomes easy. However, immigration does not cease once you arrive. It continues with paperwork, renewals, applications, and compliance. If you don't understand this, you'll be living in pointless fear and confusion. Immigration necessitates knowledge, patience, and discipline. Without these, you risk making blunders that will set you back years or possibly jeopardise your stay.
The idea is to approach immigration seriously from the onset. Understand the terms of your visa before arrival. If you are not permitted to work, then do not work. If you cannot claim public funds, do not do so. If you have deadlines for extensions or applications, create reminders and never wait until the last minute. Too many Nigerians end up in trouble because they treat immigration casually. But the UK system does not play with documentation. Small errors, missed dates, or incomplete applications can cost you time, money, and opportunities.
It's also important to stay current. Immigration laws change frequently, and what was valid last year may not apply today. Do not rely solely on information from friends or WhatsApp groups. Visit government websites, obtain appropriate counsel, and, if necessary, engage skilled immigration lawyers. It is preferable to invest money on appropriate advice, than to risk losing your status. Ignorance is not an excuse under immigration law. The system is structured, and if you are sensible, you will follow the rules rather than attempting to bend them.

Immigration also requires long-term preparation. Do not simply focus on today; consider where you want to be in five or ten years. Do you want permanent residency? Do you want citizenship? Each step you take now determines whether you qualify later. If you keep moving from one temporary visa to another without strategy, you may find yourself stuck. But if you plan, you can structure your journey in a way that leads to stability.
Above all, approach immigration with confidence, not fear. Yes, the system can be tough, but many Nigerians have successfully navigated it. If they can, so can you.
