Starting a business in the UK as a Nigerian can feel like an uphill battle—but the view at the top is worth it. Pursuing a business is about more than just getting money; it is about leaving a legacy, gaining influence, and achieving freedom. But let us not deceive ourselves: the system here requires attention, not guesswork. Before you start anything, make sure your legal papers are in order, your business is registered, your insurance is in place, and your tax requirements are clear. There will be no cutting corners.
You must also approach your business with the appropriate mindset. This is not Lagos traffic, where noise equals motion. Progress is tracked in planning, execution, and customer feedback. Create a clear business plan, research your competitors, and understand your pricing. Don’t just throw something into the market and hope for the best. The UK consumer is discerning, and mediocrity won’t carry you far.
Do not overlook mentorship. Connect with someone who has already walked this route. Experience is what matters, not their age. When you can learn from others, why go through the trial-and-error process? Attend workshops, join local business organisations, and stay informed. This is not a country where ignorance is acceptable. Resources are everywhere; all you have to do is reach for them.
Finally, be patient and persistent. The journey may appear slow at first, but taking steady steps will propel you forward. Keep an eye on the long game. Your business can grow here, not simply survive. However, it will require discipline, humility, and a willingness to adapt.
