When you japa, one of the fastest ways to lose your sense of self is to isolate yourself. However, one of the most effective methods to restore your footing is to interact with cultural groups.  Nigerian cultural clubs, community fellowships, and diaspora circles are more than just gatherings for jollof, maltina and gist; they are strategic support structures.  They assist you in remaining rooted, obtaining important information more quickly, and capitalising on possibilities that would otherwise go unexplored.  When you join the correct groups, you may speed up your integration while maintaining your identity.

Many individuals undervalue the power of association.  However, ethnic groups frequently have access to job recommendations, housing assistance, immigration counsel, child care tips, and even mental health services. When your family is far away, they serve as your first point of contact in an emergency.  The key, however, is to identify the appropriate group; not every crowd is beneficial.  Avoid cliques that exist just to talk or compete.  Discover groups that promote growth, collaboration, and support.

These groups also provide a platform.  You can lead, serve, teach, and learn.  You get to demonstrate your abilities and be noticed by individuals who understand where you’re coming from.  They help you maintain your cultural pride while embracing your new reality.  They also serve as a reminder of your “why” when times are tough.  Sometimes just hearing someone else’s tale reminds you that you’re not insane; you’re just adjusting, and you’re not alone.

That said, be wise. Don’t get stuck in only Nigerian spaces. Use cultural groups as your base, but expand your network too. The UK is multicultural for a reason. Explore, connect, and learn from others.
