Back home, holidays are loud and social, with family gatherings, neighbours dropping in, and the aroma of jollof rice wafting from every corner. In the UK, the experience is different. If you don't plan ahead of time, your holidays here can be lonely, silent, and even unpleasant. Holidays are less colourful due to work culture, weather, and people's overall lifestyle. This is why you must accept responsibility for fostering the holiday spirit you desire; else, you will feel detached and depleted.
One of the biggest mistakes Nigerians make is focussing solely on work and survival, forgetting that vacations are a part of life. The strain to pay bills, send money home, and secure a solid existence might distract you from the need to rest and celebrate. But here’s the truth: if you do not learn to pause, the system will wear you down. Holidays, even short ones, recharge you. They give you time to think, to reset, and to bond with family. The UK offers opportunities for affordable travel, even if it is just taking a train to another city or enjoying a few days in Europe for less than what you would imagine. You could scout for bargains and book in advance.
Holidays are also an opportunity to share your culture. You can instil the Nigerian spirit in your home and neighbourhood. Invite people over, prepare traditional meals, dance to Nigerian music, and make it joyous. This is more than simply fun; it is also about protecting your mental health. It serves as a reminder that joy is not lost when you travel; it simply needs to be consciously produced.
Do not forget that holidays provide opportunities for exposure. Many Nigerians avoid exploring because they believe travel is always pricey. However, with careful planning, you can take travels that broaden your view, introduce your children to history, and develop family bonds.
