When you Japa, your circle transforms dramatically. Family, friends, and acquaintances no longer function in the same way as they did in Nigeria. The distance affects the subtleties. Those who were once close may recede, while people you scarcely spoke-to before, may suddenly want to reconnect, often with expectations. Without the regular physical presence of extended relatives, you’ll discover how much of family relationship is founded on intentionality rather than proximity. You must learn to nurture these ties carefully, scheduling conversations, remembering birthdays, and showing interest in their lives even from afar.

Friends and acquaintances play a different role when you're overseas. Some old friends will slowly fade away from your life largely due to distance. That is normal, and there is no reason to feel guilty about it. However, don't underestimate the value of making new acquaintances in your new area. Friends here can become family, offering emotional support, guiding you through the system, and celebrating your wins. Acquaintances, while less intimate, can still be beneficial; they may be the ones who introduce you to chances or information that can transform your situation.

Also, you must learn to distinguish between genuine and transactional relationships. Some people, whether family, friends, or acquaintances, only keep in touch because they want something from you. It's tempting to overcommit yourself to fulfil their expectations, especially if you're still adjusting to life here. However, emotional and financial boundaries are necessary for your sanity. Learn to say no without guilt and invest your energy in those who truly value your presence, not just your resources.

The UK also requires a new attitude to socialising. People here place a high priority on privacy and personal space, unlike in Nigeria. Even among close friends, you must respect boundaries and avoid expecting constant availability. Relationships thrive when they are mutually courteous, so understand the cultural norms of interaction and adapt accordingly.
