In Nigeria, a job is just that. You show up, work, and are paid. However, in the UK, your job contract governs your entire experience. There are various types of employment: zero-hour, part-time, full-time, temporary, self-employed, agency, and PAYE; each with its own set of rights, duties, and hazards. If you don’t know the type of contract you’re on, you’re setting yourself up to be exploited. Because let’s face it: in this country, ignorance is expensive.
Zero-hour contracts may appear flexible, but they also provide no guaranteed hours. You can be scheduled for 40 hours one week and 4 the next. And when you're living pay cheque to pay cheque, the unpredictability is dangerous. Agency work may pay more in the short term, but the lack of sick pay, vacation time, and pension contributions might catch up with you quickly. Don't just jump into any job; ask questions. Understand what you are signing.
Full-time and part-time positions with suitable contracts typically include advantages such as paid time off, workplace pensions, union protection, and job security. However, they are not always easy to find or maintain, particularly for newcomers. This is why many Nigerians work several shifts under various systems. It is acceptable to hustle, but only if you do so wisely.
Also, consider the tax ramifications of your contract. If you are self-employed or work as a contractor, you are responsible for filing your own taxes. And if you goof up, HMRC will come after you. Don't just collect payslips; read them. Know your deductions. Keep records. Use tax calculators.
Finally, your contract serves as your shield. It is the first line of defence when something goes wrong. Whether you're being underpaid, mistreated, or unfairly fired, it all comes down to what you signed. So do not sign blindly. Ask questions. Get clarity. And if something does not feel right, go away. There’s always another job, but your dignity and stability should never be negotiated.
